Every ship over 400 tons or carrying more than 12 passengers that comes into any port other than a regular passenger ferry must be boarded by a pilot to advise them the way into port or anchorage the pilot is usually picked up about 2 or 3 miles out and at about 8-10 knots when the ship leaves the pilot goes with them and then taken of by the pilot boat again. not so nice when it's blowing a gale.
